So yeah, ultimately enjoyed Pikmin and Pikmin 2 way more. Pikmin 3 is an all-time classic. For me it's the defining Pikmin game. The challenge quests (DLC) was also immensely satisfying. Pikmin 4 is easier to comprehend i think for new players. It's more convenient, as the addition of your puppy just takes away a lot of the woes. But the thing is, those woes are what set Pikmin apart and what made 3 such a superb game.
